\r\n\r\nIn the event of a serious hardware problem, most laptop owners would never tear apart their device, instead relying on the vendor or a repair shop to do the hard labor. But the repairability of a tech product is important in that it tells us how well the manufacturer put all the internal parts together and how expensive the device may be to fix when it's no longer under warranty.
\r\n\r\nHow did the Surface Book score on iFixit's repairability scale? It received a grade of 1 out of 10 (1 being the worst).
\r\n\r\nKeep in mind this is a slim laptop that can convert into a tablet via a detachable keyboard, so Microsoft had to squeeze a lot into a small package. The iFixit team found a variety of components glued or soldered on, making them difficult to remove. The processor and memory are both soldered to the motherboard. A strong adhesive is affixed to many components, including the display, base cover and both batteries. The base battery is "very heavily glued," according to iFixit, so removing and replacing it would not be an easy task.
\r\n\r\nAnother "gotcha" is that many of the internal parts are located on the backs of their circuit boards, which means you have to remove the entire motherboard to replace them. Finally, the motherboard itself is inserted upside down and "sprawls throughout the entire chassis, resembling some kind of nightmarish Tetris piece," iFixit said. Just accessing the motherboard sounds like a battle not for the faint of heart.

Roskomnadzor, the Russian media regulator, claimed in court that Telegram was not in compliance with its legal obligations and characterized the messaging service as an "organizer of information distribution," according to Reuters. Pavel Chikov, Telegram's lawyer, has already responded to the suit, saying that it is "groundless," the BBC reports.
\r\n\r\nThe conflict between Telegram and the Russian government goes back to last year, when the FSB (the successor to the KGB) demanded that the founder, Pavel Durov, hand over encryption keys to the service. The reasoning was that terrorists had used the apps to plan an attack, and the FSB needed access to it in the name of national security. Durov has steadfastly refused, even as the Russian government has been threatening to ban Telegram if he didn't cooperate. Now, it seems, the government is ready to make good on that threat.
\r\n\r\nRussia has been trying to exert more control over social media and online communications over the years, and legislation passed in 2016 gave them the means to do it. This law requires any messaging service that operates within Russia to provide the government with the ability to decrypt messages, the equivalent of backdoor access. Durov, Telegram's founder, has long claimed that this is not only unconstitutional, but it's not feasible from a technical standpoint because of the end-to-end encryption Telegram uses.
\r\n\r\nIf Russia moves ahead with the ban, then domestic ISPs will have to blacklist domains and IP addresses that Telegram uses. It will be interesting to see what happens, as Facebook recently rejected a demand that it store Russian user data domestically. Russia's actions with Telegram could make clear how serious the government is about exerting control over social media and online messaging.

\r\n"If you look at similar activities across the region, it gives us some cause for concern. From Djibouti to, Gwadar put to Hambantota port in Sri Lanka, and now potentially the Maldives and then extending further east, it's of concern," he said.
\r\n
\r\nOther countries in the region have expressed similar concern, including India, he noted.
\r\n
\r\n"We believe the interests of all states - large and small - are best served by maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific and a rules-based order. Some of China's activities that we've observed give us concern because they do not seem to be consistent with those interests. I suspect India shares these concerns as well," Felter said.

\r\nDuring a recent visit to the US, Ahmed Naseem, a former foreign minister of Maldives, had alleged that China was meddling in internal affairs of Maldives and had indulged itself in a massive land grabbing endeavour which if left unchecked would pose a major strategic threat to both the US and India.

\r\nChina, he alleged, appeared to be keen on building a base in the Maldives which one day may house warships and submarines.
JAKARTA, Indonesia — The Indonesian government said Friday it’s investigating Facebook over the privacy breach of its Indonesian users.
\r\n\r\nThe Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said in a statement that it had asked the National Police chief to investigate possible violations of Indonesia’s privacy law a day after Facebook announced that personal data of more than 1 million Indonesians might have been exposed by political consultant Cambridge Analytica.
\r\n\r\nIt said Facebook representatives in Indonesia could face up to 12 years in prison and a fine of $871,000 if convicted.
\r\n\r\nThe ministry summoned the representatives late Thursday to deliver a warning letter.
\r\n\r\nCommunications Minister Rudiantara told reporters after the meeting that he has asked Facebook to stop its applications that could allow third parties to get users’ personal information.
\r\n\r\n“We ask Facebook to provide us their audit results to see how the personal information is used by the Cambridge Analytica,” said Rudiantara, who, like many Indonesians, uses a single name.
\r\n\r\nFacebook Indonesia head of public policy Ruben Hattari said they will keep cooperating with the Indonesian government.
\r\n\r\n“Our main goal is to secure privacy data of all Facebook users,” Hattari said after the meeting.
\r\n\r\nIndonesia is the world’s fourth-largest Facebook user with more than 115 million active members, and nearly 97 percent of them are on mobile devices.

And with Apple rumoured to unleash an iPhone SE 2 soon, this answer from Samsung makes sense.
According to a Geekbench listing we can expect the Samsung Galaxy S9 mini to pack in a decent 4GB of RAM, plenty for nearly every need then. This will be running an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 CPU meaning an Adreno 512 GPU. So all very speedy, then.
\r\n\r\nFew other specs were revealed which does leave the question, is this a mini or just another Samsung smartphone? We’ll have to wait and see exactly what the commercial name for this SM-G8750 turns out to be. Since the S9 is an SM-G960, this new handset isn’t far removed from that naming class.
\r\n\r\nOther specs are not clear but we’re hoping for a 5-inch Infinity Display and a decent front and rear camera combo, at least. But, of course, the real appeal will be a more affordable price tag. The last Mini was released three months after the flagship so if it is released, then expect the S9 Mini to appear soon.

\r\n\r\nProsecutors say the Apple Watch data “is a foundational piece of evidence for demonstrating the falsity of the defendant’s account to police”.
\r\n\r\nThe 26-year-old is accused of staging a home invasion, having told police that a group of men had forced their way into the property.
\r\n\r\nShe maintains that they followed the victim home from her workplace and were arguing with her outside the property for around 20 minutes.
\r\n\r\nA neighbour alerted police after the suspect emerged from the property bound and gagged in a deeply distressed state at around 10pm on the day of the murder.
\r\n\r\nMs Nilsson maintains she did not hear the murder as she was tied up in the kitchen with the door closed. However prosecutors say the Apple Watch data contradicts her story and suggests her mother-in-law was ambushed shortly after she arrived home.
\r\n\r\n“The deceased must have been attacked at around 6:38pm and had certainly died by 6:45pm,” prosecutor Carmen Matteo told a bail hearing.
\r\n\r\n“If that evidence is accepted, it tends to contradict the accused’s version of an argument occuring between the deceased and these men outside the laundry [room] for a period of up to 20 minutes.
\r\n\r\n“Her emergence from the house was well after 10pm and if the Apple iWatch evidence is accepted, that is over three hours after the attack on the deceased.
\r\n\r\n“That represents time within which to stage the scene … and represents time to clean up and discard bloodied clothing.”
\r\n\r\nProsecutors say data from the Apple Watch, which measures the wearer’s heart rate throughout the day, disproves her version of events.
\r\n\r\n“This defendant did not foresee that the police would be able to discern time of death and other information from that device,” added Ms Matteo.
\r\n\r\nMs Nilsson has been denied bail and is scheduled to stand trial in June. Wearable technology and health app data has been increasingly used as evidence in murder trials in the US and Europe.
\r\n\r\nThe Fitbit data suggests his wife, Connie Dabate, was moving around for an hour after her husband claimed she was murdered by an intruder. He denies the murder.

\r\n\r\nDutcher sat down with Billboard over sweetgrass tea at Toronto's NishDish, a traditional Anishinaabe restaurant, to chat about the album, give us a history lesson — and teach us some Wolastoq language basics. Be sure to try them on him if you see his show in New York at Joe's Pub, May 4.
\r\n\r\nTo start with, there's about 60 different Aboriginal languages Canada and Cree is the biggest with 83,000 speakers, according to Statistic Canada, 2011.
\r\n\r\nCree is the biggest linguistic group, for sure, followed by Anishinaabemowin, which is the Ojibway [19,000], or what's spoken around here, and then Inuktitut.
\r\n\r\nDo they have commonalities?
\r\n\r\nOh yeah. It's like the language groups in Europe. Think about the romantic languages like French and Italian, they're so close together because geographically they came out of the same area. It's similar here too, I can't fully understand what they speak here, but you notice certain words, like our word for “bear” is the same.
\r\n\r\nWas it important in your family to learn your native language?
\r\n\r\nDefinitely. I'm from New Brunswick originally, so that's on the east coast of Canada. My mother spoke the language growing up, and she understood the importance of passing that on to us,
\r\n\r\nIf I'm going to be talking to you about an album you made to preserve and expand your language, then I should know how to pronounce Wolastoq.
\r\n\r\nWool-las-took. The language, is Wolastoqey wool-las-two-gway. The name of the river is Wolastoq and the name of my people, “The People of the River,” is Wolastoqiyik, [pronounced] Willisto-wee-ek, and that's the first word of the record title. So the name of the record is Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonaw — wool-las-two-wi-ig lint-two-wah-gun-ah-wa.
\r\n\r\nHow does it compare to the English language in terms of consonants and vowels, and how many words you have?
\r\n\r\nIt came out of a different hemisphere than English did, so even the ways that we think about the world and how we position ourselves within the world are different. It's hard to explain for somebody that doesn't speak the language, but it's just a totally different positionality in how we see the world in the language. That's why it's important for us to hang on to that too.
\r\n\r\nThe elders say that our language comes from the land; it's intimately tied. You see a tree, but I don't see a tree; I see a ƏpƏsiyik [pron. oposiyik]. I see the world in a different way based on the way that I speak and the way that I experience things. We have like 20 different words to describe that tree — in the bark, in certain times of season. So much to say that there's an intimate relationship between language and land.
\r\n\r\nFor me, as a young person with access to that language, a lot of young people don't speak my language in our community, I was very fortunate in that my mother was able to pass on some, and through this record I've been able to double down on my efforts in revitalizing our language and I've been working with our stories, and telling our stories in the language.

Or how Facebook, which is the second-largest online ad company in the world, allowed advertisers to market explicitly to people’s bigotries, as their software suggested ad-targeting terms like “Jew haters” and “threesome rape.” And then there’s the reason Zuckerberg finally relented to calls that he testify, the scandal involving political-data firm Cambridge Analytica, wherein the Facebook data of tens of millions people was harvested off the platform and allegedly used to help Trump’s campaign.
\r\n\r\nAll of this happened on Zuckerberg’s watch—with virtually no federal laws that would have protected Americans’ privacy and the health of the country’s information ecosystem. Depending on what happens at Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s hearings, Facebook might not stay unregulated for very long. The only major legislative proposal currently drafted and seeking support is the Honest Ads Act, championed by Democratic Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Mark Warner and Republican Sen. John McCain. That bill would require political advertisements on Facebook to list who paid for them, just like political ads on radio, print, and television do, and would levy fines on social media companies that don’t follow the rules. On Friday, Facebook executives said in a blog postthat the company does support the Honest Ads Act, although Zuckerberg told Wired last month that he doesn’t expect that bill to pass. Considering the public blowback his company is currently facing, that legislation might be the easiest thing for Congress to pull off the shelf to show Americans that Facebook won’t pass through this controversy without consequences.
\r\n\r\nIn broad strokes, most of the concerns members of Congress will likely raise will center on questions of user privacy, election integrity, and the company’s indisputable impact on how Americans communicate and get their news. (Some Republicans will probably also raise questions of whether Facebook is in some way biased against conservatives.) Throughout both hearings, lawmakers will likely highlight reporting on how Facebook’s internal culture and policies reveal that the company was well aware of how its platform was being misused and yet decided not to take the substantial steps to fix it, all the while continuing to be one of the most valuable companies in the world with control over how billions of people get information and stay connected to their personal and professional communities.
\r\n\r\nIf the committee members really want to move the ball forward in terms of what we know about Facebook, here are some questions they might consider asking Zuckerberg while he’s under oath.

He grins and guns the engine; the white sands, tall palms and stilt houses of Derawan island come into focus.
\r\n\r\nMy teenage son and I have travelled through the coal mine-scarred landscape beyond Berau, a riverside town in Kalimantan on mainland Indonesian Borneo (and reached via two flights from Singapore), to take a boat out to spend a week exploring a few of the archipelago’s scores of islands. Only two are officially inhabited, though 30-odd others have names and some are home to scientists and sea-dwelling boat people. By the end of this year the islands will be better connected to the mainland, with the completion of a small airport on Maratua island, which will handle short-haul flights.
\r\n\r\nWe’ll be spending the next couple of days at Derawan Dive Lodge, a cluster of elegant wooden cabanas reached by jetty over limpid waters, where green turtles graze on sea grass and algae. At least 15,000 female turtles return to the archipelago every year, often swimming many thousands of kilometres to lay their eggs on the beaches where they had hatched. Now, so many turtles graze off Derawan island, many of them non-local breeders, that their food sources are becoming scarce.
\r\n\r\nThe highest tides, around the full moon and the new moon, are the best time to watch the females drag their heavy bodies up the sand and wheeze and grunt through the ovulation process. “One laid her eggs under the restaurant a couple of weeks ago,” says the lodge’s Indonesian manager. We’ve missed their hatching, sadly.

It all seems like a quagmire, but at least qualitatively, the new naming scheme is less quirky.
\r\n\r\nAlongside the new name is an updated logo for Android, one that Aude Gandon, global brand director for Android, says has a “more modern” wordmark. Importantly, it will always include the little green robot. “The robot is what makes Android special. It makes it human, fun, and approachable,” Gandon says.

The feature can pull colors from your wallpaper and apply them to system accents and many apps.
\r\n\r\nThere are also numerous privacy enhancements in Android 12, with new indicators that visibly show when the microphone or camera are in use, even if it’s in the background. Users can choose to give apps only an approximate location instead of a precise one, and there’s a Privacy Dashboard in the Settings to easily show which apps are using sensitive permissions.
\r\n\r\nWhat devices will get Android 12? The list of Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets that will eventually be updated is quite long, and generally speaking includes every device released within the past two years, and flagships going even further back. So far, Samsung has confirmed the following devices for updates to Android 12.
\r\n\r\nDevices newly added to Samsung’s official list are marked in bold.
\r\n\r\nThe list starts with Samsung’s Galaxy S21 series, which has already seen its update roll out to device owners in the US, on carriers, and in other regions around the world. Samsung will further update the entire Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S10 lineups to Android 12 in the first couple of months of 2022.
\r\n\r\nSamsung opened up the Galaxy S20 to its Android 12 update in beta in November of 2021, with the devices scheduled to be updated in January and February of 2022. In December, the beta expanded to Galaxy S10 devices.
\r\n\r\nSamsung’s Galaxy Note lineup, which certainly seems to be going away for good, will only see 5 devices updated to Android 12. That includes both Galaxy Note 20 devices as well as the Galaxy Note 10 series. The Galaxy Note 20 series has been in beta for some time, and in December 2021, Samsung extended support to the Galaxy Note 10 series.
\r\n\r\nSamsung’s foldable lineup is growing and the entire portfolio is eligible for the update to Android 12 and One UI 4.0. Samsung already has an active beta program for the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3 as of November, with the update scheduled to roll out before the year’s end. Samsung has also offered beta updates for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Z Flip series.
\r\n\r\nIn December 2021, Samsung started rolling out stable updates to Android 12 for both the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in certain regions, with availability constantly widening.
\r\n\r\nAs the company expands its work on updates, Samsung is bringing Android 12 to a huge list of its popular Galaxy A series. So far, Samsung has confirmed the update will come to 15 Galaxy A devices, with most of those being confirmed as of November 16.
\r\n\r\nIn the Android world, tablets are not a big deal, and finding one with good support is pretty difficult. Samsung, though, is standing by most of its Android tablets, with Android 12 coming to 8 tablets over the next few months.
\r\n\r\nNot long after starting its rollout to the Galaxy S21, Samsung also confirmed an official timeline of when to expect Android 12 updates on various other Galaxy smartphones.
\r\n\r\nThe Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are next in line, with Samsung planning a launch in December of this year. Notably, we’ve seen multiple beta updates for these devices since the program first opened, so Samsung is clearly getting close to that launch.
\r\n\r\nThe timeline, released via the Samsung Members app, sees most of Samsung’s smartphone being updated to Android 12 in January and February of next year, with previous-generation flagships such as the Galaxy S20 series and Galaxy S10 series updated in those months. One interesting quirk is that Samsung says the standard Galaxy S20 won’t be updated until February, where the rest of the series will be coming in January.
\r\n\r\nAlso of note on this schedule is that Samsung currently plans to be rolling out Android 12 for the next 8 months, with some Galaxy A series devices not being updated until August of next year. Of course, there’s always a chance things could speed up if development goes well.

In an update to the Google app on Android, a reference to "PIXEL_EXPERIENCE_WATCH" points at the gadget sharing in the Pixel branding. The company uses these "experience" tags to mark exclusive features, and it looks like this specific watch could follow in the footsteps of phones like the Pixel 6.
\r\n\r\nThe name "Pixel Watch," or some slight variation on it, makes a lot of sense. Google has finally started taking hardware a lot more seriously with the release of its recent flagship phones, and earlier rumors suggest a similar path with its watch. Keeping its mobile-focused lineup under one brand — just as its smart home gear uses the "Nest" name — makes a whole lot of sense.
\r\n\r\nSo what might those exclusive features cover? We don't know much about the software experience on this gadget just yet — hell, we barely know what Wear OS 3 looks like without Samsung's One UI skin in the first place — but it sounds like the newest version of Assistant that first launched with the Pixel 4 might make an appearance. It would allow for voice commands and queries to run directly on the watch, rather than always reaching out to the web for every single action. 9to5Google even managed to find an Assistant-related asset in the Wear OS 3 emulator, complete with a light bar design exclusive to Pixel phones.

\r\n\r\nIt was the first time the British regulator had blocked a major digital acquisition, and it signalled a step change in its scrutiny of "big tech" companies.
\r\n\r\n"We are appealing the CMA's Giphy decision and will seek a stay of the CMA's order to divest," a Meta spokesperson said on Thursday.
\r\n\r\n"The decision to block the deal is wrong on the law and the facts, and the evidence does not support the CMA's conclusions or remedy."
\r\n\r\nHalf of traffic to Giphy's huge library of looping videos comes from Meta's platforms Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
\r\n\r\nIts GIFs are also popular with users of TikTok, Twitter, and Snapchat, and the CMA was concerned Meta could limit access or force rivals to provide more user data.
\r\n\r\nMeta said it would not change the terms of access for competitors, nor collect addition data from the use of GIFs, which have no online tracking mechanisms such as pixels or cookies.
\r\n\r\nThe CMA rejected the remedy, which Meta offered to make legally binding, in part because it would require ongoing monitoring.
\r\n\r\nThe regulator was also concerned Meta had closed down Giphy's fledgling advertising business, removing a potential source of competition.
\r\n\r\nMeta said Giphy's advertising business was unsuccessful, and if it had the potential to become a major competitor its model could be replicated by any other GIF provider. It argues the deal did not, therefore, meet the threshold of a "substantial lessoning of competition" needed for the CMA to block it.

\r\n\r\nThe feature under scrutiny is called Passenger Play, and it allows users to play games on their in-car touchscreen.
\r\n\r\nIt does warn that playing while in motion is "only for passengers" and asks for confirmation of this before allowing gameplay.
\r\n\r\nBut the NHTSA noted that Passenger Play "may distract the driver and increase the risk of a crash".
\r\n\r\nIt added that the feature had been available since December 2020. Previously the game feature was only enabled when the vehicle was in Park mode.
\r\n\r\nEarlier this month the NHTSA reported that 3,142 road deaths in 2019 were attributed to distracted drivers.
\r\n\r\nGuidelines published by the agency in 2013 recommend that in-vehicle devices be designed so that they cannot be used by the driver "to perform inherently distracting secondary tasks while driving".
\r\n\r\nLast month, Tesla owner Vince Patton from Oregon spotted a video on YouTube which highlighted how Passenger Play could be used by drivers.
\r\n\r\nAfter testing it in a car park and finding he could indeed play several games while driving, he filed a complaint with the NHTSA, describing the feature as "recklessly negligent".
\r\n\r\nEarlier this month, Mercedes-Benz issued a recall for an issue caused by a computer configuration error that allowed drivers to browse the internet or watch television while the cars were moving.
